The Saint John City Market Might Just Be The Best In Canada

Everyone digs a farmer’s market: the fresh food, the entertainment, the open air, the vibrant colours and sounds. We’re forever on a quest to find the best markets in Canada and think one of the oldest our country has may just be a contender.

The Saint John City Market started in 1785, a full 82 years before the Canadian Confederation. Yeah, very old. Canadian National Historic Site old. This market houses spots such as North Market Seafood, who boasts they have the best smoked salmon in the country, and most definitely have the best seafood in New Brunswick. If you’re making the trip, also be sure to pick up some local maple syrup, which gives Quebec’s maple syrup a run for it’s money.  Slocum & Ferris is another New Brunswick staple and features the DLT: Dulse (seaweed), lettuce, and tomato. It’s a healthy and delicious alternative to the traditional BLT and a must try if you visit.

In the summer, the market features a summer music series, is close to the boardwalk, five minutes from the incredible Station One Skatepark, an insanely fun arcade bar, and some of New Brunswick’s best microbreweries.

We asked notorious New Brunswick comedian James Mullinger to give us a quick tour of the spot. Check it out below.
