Montreal fashion and beauty blogger Catherine Belle knows how to pull things together—namely, a killer outfit, and a devoted Instagram community of 552,000 followers. After arriving in Montreal five years ago to study, Belle built her following by taking photos of great outfits and products found around the Quebec metropolis, which is known for its rich multicultural make-up, cobblestone streets, quaint cafes and boutiques, and having the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada. There are also some amazing day trips you can take if you’re in Montreal for a longer time, because the city is surrounded by pretty townships and stunning landscapes.
With Montreal as her backdrop, Belle has come to know the historic city’s ins-and-outs—which is why we took some time to ask her about its many highlights.
If you could only take one photo in Montreal, where should that be?
I would probably take it at the summit of Mount Royal. The lookout has such a wonderful view of the city.
What’s your favourite thing to eat in Montreal, that you can’t find anywhere else? Any must-try restaurants?
I recently tried Au Pied de Cochon and highly recommend it! It’s more on the expensive side but also one of the most renowned restaurants in Montreal. Boustan is my go-to when I’m craving a shawarma and garlic potatoes. It’s affordable and so good.
How does the vibe of the city and its culture influence your personal style?
Thanks to the many different cultures here in Montreal, there are so many interesting people with a unique sense of fashion. I think my personal style reflects the Old Port, which has a more European look and vibe.
What kind of outfit would you wear for winter, summer, fall and spring in the city?
In the summer, I love wearing white converse with high waisted Levis and a crop top. For spring and fall I usually pair dark jeans with booties and a bomber jacket. In the winter, I keep warm with fuzzy boots and a big coat!
Everyone in Montreal loves a good cinq-à-sept—what’s your favourite place to grab a drink?
Montreal’s also known for its nightlife. Where’s the best spot to go out? What about late-night food?
Finally, what are three must-see places or must-do activities tourists should experience in Montreal?
I think tourists should definitely go for a walk in Old Montreal and to the top of Mont-Royal. I’d also recommend the Montreal Biodome—it’s super cool and a great family activity.
