Claw To Claw: The Search For The Best Lobster In PEI

When one thinks of Prince Edward Island, chances are they think of red dirt, potatoes, Anne of Green Gables, golf courses, and most importantly, lobsters. The Island has been creating quite a culinary buzz, but there’s still no better way to get a sense of the cuisine than chowing down on the provincial dish. So, whether you’re a local, or intend to head to the Island for a vacation, get ready to lace up a plastic bib and sort out why these crustaceans keep people coming back for more.

 Lobster On The Wharf

Address: 2 Prince St, Charlottetown, PE C1A 4P5

Hours: 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM

Phone: (902) 368-2888

The largest seafood restaurant in Charlottetown serves up a traditional island supper with slaw, potato salad, steamed lobster with butter and lemon. We didn’t try it, but there’s something called, “The Lobster Feed For Two” on the menu that involves three pounds of mussels and four pounds of lobster.

The Brickhouse

Address: 125 Sydney St, Charlottetown, PE C1A 1G5

Hours: 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Phone: (902) 566-4620

The Brickhouse features local produce and fresh caught seafood, everything on the menu is delicious. And while you can pick your own lobster fresh from a tank in the restaurant, we recommend the lobster and scallop gnocchi.

Shipwright’s Cafe

Address: 11869 Route 6, Margate, PEI

Hours: 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Phone: (902) 566-4620

The approach to Shipwright’s feels more like driving up to your grandparent’s house than a farm-to-table restaurant. But that’s a good thing. This cozy historic farmhouse has tables placed to look out upon the surrounding pastures and hills of rural PEI. Their “French River” Paella is next level and features plenty of fresh local lobster.

Dave’s Lobster

Address: 6 Prince Street, Charlottetown, PEI

Hours: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Phone: (855) 503-2837

Dave’s doesn’t do chowder, or burgers, or pizza, they do one thing, and that’s lobster — specifically lobster rolls. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better lobster roll on the island. The simple and fresh menu has endeared itself to locals, and while a classic roll with local potato chips and a pickle is good, the lobster tacos are also completely incredible.

Address: 36 Richmond Street Charlottetown, PEI

Hours: 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM and 11:00-12:00AM on Sundays

Phone: (902) 628-6569

This unique restaurant supports local fishermen, farmers, and musicians. You read that correctly. While this awesome restaurant is primarily known for its food, it also operates the City Stages Program, a music program that encourages outdoor performance for aspiring musicians. To do Fishbones right, head to their top deck patio for some small bites and sunshine or stay on the main level patio and order up their traditional lobster dinner.
