Looking for love in Canada? Consider heading to Victoria, B.C.
According to Amazon Canada, the British Columbia capital is Canada’s most romantic city—or at least the city whose citizens are most interested in purchasing romance novels, rom-coms, and sexual wellness products.
This is the tenth year the online retail giant has ranked Canada’s top markets for love, analyzing sales data from Jan. 1, 2018, to Jan. 1, 2019. Victoria took top honours for the seventh year in a row with a clean sweep in all purchase categories, which also included relationship books, and jewellery.
British Columbia came out on top once again with the highest number of cities in the top 20, including North Vancouver (No. 4), Kelowna (No. 7), and Courtenay (No. 9). Joining their experienced partners, Port Coquitlam, B.C., and Bowmanville and Aurora in Ontario entered the ranking for the first time.
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, there’s no better time to make a trip to a Canadian city of love near you. Check out our round-up of romantic date ideas in the top five cities below.
Winter temperatures in Victoria are on the mild side, but still perfect for an enjoyable day outdoors. Fisherman’s Wharf is a scenic spot by the water that’s great for a first date—take it easy watching the seals, shopping quaint boutiques, and trying delicious local restaurants. Downtown Victoria will also satisfy your chocolate cravings, with the city’s signature Rogers’ Chocolates attracting foodies from near and far.
It seems your chances of love may prosper in the small town of LaSalle near Montreal, as the city shot up the list from No. 11 in 2018 to No. 2 this year. Though rain, snow, and cold temperatures are often the norm at this time of year, a blossoming romance would surely warm you up. Another way you and your new boo can avoid the winter chill is by staying indoors and throwing on a classic movie—for the second year in a row, Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, was Canadians’ go-to rom-com.
Looking for something low key? For a fun night out, Fort McMurray locals consistently recommend Keyano Theatre, a community arts centre that puts on entertaining plays and comedy shows. Upcoming productions include Mamma Mia! and THE INVISIBLE: Agents of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Grab your date, tickets, and popcorn and check out this 37-year tradition.
The Vancouver area has it all—unique local shops and boutiques, swimming holes (for when the weather is a little warmer, or if you’re feeling bold in the cold), and endless options for scrumptious food. For the best overview of everything the city has to offer, check out the stunning panoramic views as you ride a Skyride cable car at Grouse Mountain. It’s also the perfect excuse to get a cute couple photo.
It’s not New York, but Spruce Grove’s Central Park is a mini winter wonderland. Lace up your skates for a lap around the skating loop and afterwards, warm up by the community fire pit. Next door to the park, enjoy a specialty drink and panini from Perks Coffee House, a Spruce Grove favourite.
