Calgary’s Most Popular Hangout Will Surprise You (Till You See The Photos)

Where do the cool kids hang out in Calgary? The library, obviously. No really, Calgary’s six-month-old Central Library has become a hot spot in a city that lately has been collecting some serious architectural gems (see: Studio Bell’s incredible National Music Centre and the renovated Simmons Building, coffee company Phil & Sebastian’s super cool HQ). Located in the city’s East Village, the library has been visited by close to a million people since it opened and has made the BBC’s list of the most stunning libraries in the world (along with ones in cities like Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Hanoi).

Norwegian design firm Snøhetta conceived of the library’s stunning design which includes outdoor terraces with amphitheatres built into them. The Elders Guidance Circle is a space dedicated to reconciliation where visitors can come to talk to and learn from Indigenous elders, the kids’ play area will make you want to be one again, and the great reading room definitely lives up to its name. Library staff expect two million visitors this year — both locals and travellers.

Need more proof that the library is the place to be in Calgary? Check out these photos:
