The Best Places To Eat Out(side) In Canada

If summer means rooftop patios then summer trips mean that you’re going to need to know the best ones to hit up, regardless of what city you find yourself in. For the best views, the best beers, and the most fun from Vancouver to Charlottetown, these are the places to try out during your travels.

Toronto

Mascot Brewery

A bastion of chill vibes in sea of downtown condos, Mascot’s rooftop beer garden might have one of the greatest views of the CN tower and the Toronto skyline. Hang out at a picnic table atop the astroturf-topped upper level, visit the brew shop down below, or take a selfie with one of the Mascot’s moustache pint glasses. There with five or more people? Get a keg brought right to your table. It’s like bottle service, but way less pretentious.

Harvest Kitchen

From the street, you’d never know that this restaurant hid the prettiest patio in the city just two floors up. Being on the rooftop at Harvest Kitchen feels like you’re in a treehouse right in the middle of Toronto. It’s the ideal spot for a sunny brunch with friends or a date with someone you want to impress.

Vancouver

The Rooftop Cantina

We’re suckers for kitsch and the Cantina has a tonne of it. See: the astroturfed floor, vintage patio furniture, strings of twinkly lights, and all-day party vibes. Punkers beware though: The Rooftop Cantina is attached to a country bar and plays a mix of rock and country. That said, the seriously affordable snacks and drinks may convert even the most hardcore country music hater.

Lift

The harbour, Canada Place, the North Shore, and Stanley Park are all visible from this waterside rooftop patio. Dinner here can get pricey but the bar hosts happy hour everyday from 3 to 6pm and you can get a $5 pint of craft beer on Tuesdays. Warning: views may induce serious sail boat envy and/or desire to move to Vancouver.

Montreal

Terasse sur l’Auberge

In Montreal in July, this is the ideal spot to take in the city’s Fireworks Festival. The view from the rooftop of the Auberge du Vieux-Port Hotel is, like the name says, of Montreal’s Old Port. Pyrotechnics or no, you can still soak up sights like the domed Bonsecours Market and the Jacques Cartier bridge, share a pitcher of sangria and a plate of oysters, or just get a couple of pints.

Tokyo Bar

Looking for a quiet place to have an intimate chat with friends? Don’t go to Tokyo Bar. Day or night, the bar’s rooftop patio is party central. One patio is dedicated to dancing and djs while the other has a more chill, cocktail-sipping vibe. But just slightly. When in Montreal…

Halifax

Red Stag Tavern

Follow up a tour of the Alexander Keith’s Brewery or a stop at the Saturday Brewery Farmers’ Market with a pint on the centuries-old building’s rooftop patio. Get a tan, check out Halifax’s harbour, and sample some seriously fresh Alexander Keith’s beer or be a total rebel and order a cocktail instead.

Your Father’s Moustache

You won’t forget the name of this Halifax open-air staple. Sit in the sun and take advantage of the busy streets below to do some people-watching. The patio’s table-top fire pits make the too-short East Coast summers last just a bit longer.

Calgary

National on 10th

FYI: Calgary knows how to have fun. This bar, one of four National locations in the city, features “beer, bowling, and bourbon” inside, and patio ping pong and drinks in the sun on its rooftop deck. Get brunch on the roof and a free hour of bowling, go for their 25-cent-an-ounce happy hour beers, or grab dinner and linger all night. Craft beers are the big thing here so expect an awesome selection.

#tbt to summer on the patio. Winter can be over any time now, thanks.

Charlottetown

Fishbones

Fishbones is home to Charlottetown’s only rooftop patio, but it’s a good one. The deck has suspended lounge chairs, tonnes of tables, and lots of spots around the umbrellaed bar if you can’t take the heat. Frozen drinks are served in fishbowls and come with a Corona. Downstairs is a great live music venue so you can follow up an afternoon in the sun with a show.

Drinks taste better at altitude! Join us on the rooftop for a cold one.????☝️
