If you ask some Canadian food critics, they’ll tell you that Saskatoon is home to the best restaurant in the country. Not one of the best. The. Best. Sorry, Toronto. Nice try, Vancouver. Maybe next time, Montreal. It’s Saskatoon where Top Chef Canada winner Dale MacKay chose to set up his restaurant Ayden Kitchen—and an entire creative food scene has sprung out of it or thrived, in part, because of it. So get to Saskatoon (and eat something) before the rush to reserve a table gets really crazy.
Here are five places to put on your must-try list:
Ayden Kitchen and Bar
This is the spot that started all the buzz. After his Top Chef title back in 2011, MacKay took over an old Saskatoon diner, gave it a modern makeover, and developed a menu of mains, sides, cocktails, and desserts that border on perfection. Splurge on the $25 Classic Butcher Burger (medium rare) and follow it up with a plate of warm Madeleines and chocolate dipping sauce (if you’ve got the room).
If you are looking for unique local deliciousness try out The Hollows. The atmosphere is comfortable yet trendy and the food is some of the best in Saskatoon. Local Tip: Don’t forget to try the cocktails as they are made with the same local ingredients and thoughtfulness as the food.
Saskatoon Station Place
Apparently the steaks at Station Place are fantastic, but honestly, who cares? You’re going for the experience of hanging out in an old fashioned train car. From the outside, the restaurant looks a bit like a place you’d go with your grandparents. On the inside, it’s Instagram heaven. If you don’t want to blow your travel budget, just go for drinks and appetizers.
This modern Asian fusion restaurant is another recent Riversdale addition that’s quickly become popular with locals. Odd Couple takes its name from the father-son duo that runs it—one is a seasoned restaurateur, the other was once a kid who couldn’t wait to get out of his dad’s kitchen. Now they work together serving up Saskatoon’s best noodles and curries. Insider tip: whatever you do, start with the Crab Rangoon.
Citizen Cafe and Bakery
If it’s coffee and baked goods you need, stop right here. Grab a spot on the couch at Citizen Cafe and Bakery and try one of their house-made treats and an Americano. Need more than a cinnamon bun to get by on? The breakfast and lunch menus offer lots of choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians. That said, we recommend the ‘Beets By Dre’ sandwich… do you really need to ask why?

Baba’s Perogies (possibly the world’s only drive-thru pierogi restaurant—owner Rob Engel recommends the Super Combo), The Grazing Goat (for their killer cocktail list), nano brewers 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, Karma Conscious Cafe for all-vegetarian options, and the Last Mile Coffee Truck for really great coffee at Saskatoon’s farmer’s market.
